John Fray, October 17, 2024: Cleveland Baseball Makes the October Sports News! For decades, Ellwood City has spawned a niche of Cleveland baseball fans. Quite well I recall some of those fans reminiscing about Cleveland's rousing 1948 World Series Championship which went into the books upon the team's Game 6 victory in Boston on October 11 of that year. I was shown one fan's yellowed newspaper which was published the following day and which had a photo of the team's post-bottom-of-the-ninth elation on the Boston Braves' field. The triumph of the 1948 team, beleaguered by decades of middling success, is not without controversy. Victory in a one-game playoff with the Boston Red Sox was the team's ticket to the Series. That game saw a questionable umpire's call regarding a ball hit to the foul pole. For diehard fans of the team, the pitch to change the team's name was a sinker. Some fans with whom I spoke told me that they would always refer to the team by its historic name. I was wary of the name change as well. However, having driven across the bridge which is near the Cleveland stadium, I possess a feeling of awe regarding the four carved stone piers which tower above the bridge deck and which serve as metaphysical guardians of the safety of the travelers. Good luck, Guardians. Baseball season lasts weeks longer than it did in 1948. May you bring to your city another championship.
